There are many stories surrounding George Washington and while many are surrounded by mystery there is one that says that the first president of the United States used wood teeth.
Probably this legend is due to the color the teeth looked like due to the mercury oxide they had to take when facing diseases such as smallpox or malaria.
It was these treatments that caused the continuous loss of teeth from Washington, who lost his first dental piece at age 22.
Many of Washington’s false teeth were made of different combinations of hippopotamus ivory, human teeth, and metal fasteners. Thus, he obtained his first false teeth before the War of Independence.
Human teeth were mainly obtained from battlefields, but luckily for everyone, at the end of the 19th century came the first artificial teeth, which were made with celluloid.
Teeth easily turn brown without regular care and proper cleaning, and their unsightly appearance may occasionally have the appearance of being made of wood.
The dentures caused George Washington jaw discomfort and left a sort of unnatural “package” on the President’s lips, as he once wrote.
This facial disfigurement is particularly evident in the famous unfinished painting of artist Gilbert Stuart of Washington in 1796-the same portrait that appears on the dollar bill.
When Washington was named as the first president in 1789, he had only one natural tooth left in his mouth. He used the dentures made by John Greenwood during his presidency. He was elected for a second term as president and could only say a two paragraph opening speech, probably because his mouth bothered him.
So valuable were the dental prostheses for Washington that even on the day of his death he was buried with one of these.
